Free Speech in the Workplace: How to Navigate the Social Media Landscape
Event Date:
February 18, 2019 – 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Location:
Center for Graduate Life, Cone University Center 268
Facilitated by: Samantha (Sam) Sears, JD, Associate Vice Chancellor and Deputy General Counsel, UNC Charlotte Legal Affairs
Social media has changed the methods we use to communicate with society today. Social media has been used as a tool to target individuals and/or speak out against corporations for their difference in opinions and policies. Occasionally this public pressure can lead to the firing of individuals who expressed their views, or those held accountable for company policies. So what are we, as graduate students and/or employees, allowed to say on social media? Does this change if you are in the private or public sector? When does the first amendment protect your employment? Attend this free speech workshop and bring any other questions you might have! Open to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Light breakfast provided
Coordinated by Grad Life Fellow, CGL. Doctoral Candidate of Biological Sciences, Austin Jeffries.
